The church does not need to ponder morosely its own shortcomings in order to explain the breadth of the kingdom: the gift of imagination beyond the Church is not because God so resented the Church but because God so loved the world. Awareness of its own failures should increase the Church's humility, but not jaundice its vision so it cannot see the buds and sounds of God's spring elsewhere."
